Saint Charles, MO - Lindenwood University held its second USATT-sanctioned table tennis tournament on the weekend of Sep 6-7, 2008. Approximately 90 players traveled from 7 different states to compete. Butterfly sponsored the tournament by providing the white 3-star balls and the Saint Peters Table Tennis Club, provided the volunteers at the tournament desk.

The long awaited showdown between Newgy's Coach Shigang Yang (2617) and the 2008 National Collegiate Men's Singles Table Tennis Champion, Alfred Najem (2475), was no less than spectacular in the Giant A RR Singles. Alfred took a commanding 2-0 lead and was leading in the 3rd game when Shigang raised his game to a new level and tied the match at 2-games all. Once again in the 5th and final game, Alfred took a 6-1 lead, but Shigang would not be denied by finally winning the last game 11-9.

Runner-up: Alfred Najem

The youth from Indiana came into town to lay claim to their own titles. Joey Cochran (2395) took second in the Open Division losing to Shigang 11-6, 11-6, 11-6. Dan Seemiller Jr (2153) took the U-2200 title over Peoria's Sonny Henderson in 4 games. Andre Khailo (1947) rounded out the Indiana trio by capturing 2nd place in the U-2000 Singles losing by the slimmest of margins 11-9 in the 5th to Thirumurugan Karunakaran.

Lindenwood University players won three championships...Brad Kendle (U-1800), Ryan Driskill (Giant C), and Efrain Barreto (Giant D). Lindenwood freshman, Jeffrey Schulte, also took second in the U-1800.
