2008 State Games of the West

July 26-27, Colorado Springs - More than 8,000 athletes from Colorado and a dozen Western States took part in 25 different sports in an Olympic Style Competition this past weekend in venues throughout the Colorado Springs Area. The Table Tennis Events were held at the Lanmar Racquet and Health Club and run by Bob Tretheway and Larry Rose, who once again did their usual impeccable job in conducting the event.
The local table tennis news story was young cadet star, Austin Preiss (Manitou Springs, CO). Austin was selected to be one of two torch runners to bring the official torch into the Colorado Springs World Arena for the Opening Ceremony. Austin was also spotlighted in several major newspaper articles, as well as ongoing television coverage throughout the event. Austin won the Junior Division and made a strong run in the Open Singles field before losing a close, well-played match to an inspired Nobuyuki Shiogai (Parker, CO). Austin also completed in the Golf Event were he won the Gold Medal in the Boys 13-15 age group. His older brother, Adam, also took home the gold, winning the Boys 16-18 title. It was a busy and very successful weekend for the multi-talented Preiss boys.
Richard McAfee (Aurora, CO) was the big medal winner of the table tennis events taking home three gold and one silver medal. Richard won the Over 40 Singles, Over 50 Singles, Open Singles, and along with Nobuyuki, took second in the Open Doubles losing to Chris Salazar and Ken Lieu.
Richard's unique long pips and short pips blocking game completely overwhelmed the strong two winged looping style of Phong Pham (Golden, CO) in straight games in the Open Singles Final.
